Remove infection.
Rebuild strength.
RCT deals with the soft tissue inside a tooth. A crown may then be recommended to reinforce a tooth that has lost substantial structure. They are related treatments, but each is prescribed only when indicated.

each one does.
Tap between the treatments to understand their different roles. Root canal treatment manages the tissue inside the tooth; a crown restores and protects the tooth above the gum.
Treat the inside of the tooth.
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tissue from within the tooth. The canals are carefully cleaned, shaped, disinfected and sealed before the tooth is restored.
- Aims to retain the natural tooth
- May require one or more appointments
- A final restoration protects the treated tooth

Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
Pain when biting or chewing
Swelling, tenderness or a gum pimple
A cracked, broken or heavily restored tooth

Helpful answers
RCT & crown
questions.
General information cannot replace an examination. Your dentist will explain the findings, alternatives, likely sequence, limitations and fees relevant to your tooth.
Does every root canal treated tooth need a crown?+
Not always. The decision depends on the tooth involved, the amount of remaining structure, existing cracks or restorations, and the forces placed on the tooth. Back teeth commonly need greater protection, while every case is assessed individually.
Is root canal treatment painful?+
Local anaesthesia is used to keep treatment comfortable. Tenderness can occur for a short period afterwards and usually settles. Persistent or increasing symptoms should be reviewed.
How many visits does RCT take?+
Some teeth can be treated in one appointment, while others require more. The number of canals, infection, anatomy, symptoms and the need for additional procedures influence the schedule.
Which crown material is best?+
There is no single best material for every tooth. Position, bite, available tooth structure, appearance and clinical requirements guide the choice of ceramic, zirconia, metal-ceramic or another suitable restoration.
How long will a root canal and crown last?+
Longevity varies with the original condition of the tooth, restoration quality, bite, oral hygiene, habits and regular dental care. No restoration can be guaranteed for a fixed period.
When should I seek urgent dental assessment?+
Contact the clinic urgently for severe toothache, facial swelling, fever, a dental injury or worsening symptoms. If you have difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, major swelling inside your mouth, swelling around an eye or changes in vision, seek immediate care at the nearest hospital emergency department. Do not wait for a clinic appointment or WhatsApp reply.
